Algonquin man killed in crash was on way to hospital for wife
55-year-old Algonquin man killed in a two-car crash Wednesday night was at the time already en route to the hospital where he was pronounced dead to bring personal items to his wife.
Joseph Kwak, of the 2000 block of Carlisle Street, died as a result of multiple traumatic injuries suffered at about 8:07 p.m. when his car collided with an SUV in Barrington Hills.
Authorities said the crash occurred when Kwak’s 2001 Nissan Altima, southbound on Haegers Bend Road, passed through a red light at Lake-Cook Road and collided a westbound 2004 Jeep Liberty that was westbound.
Kwak was taken from the scene of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington and pronounced dead at 8:58 p.m.
Lake County Deputy Coroner Kathy Needham said Kwak was driving to the hospital at the time of the crash to deliver a toothbrush and pillow to his wife, who was a patient there.
The Jeep’s driver, a 32-year-old Algonquin woman, and her 2-year-old daughter also were transported to Good Shepherd, where they were treated for what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but authorities said Thursday alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The intersection was shut down for roughly three hours while the scene was investigated, officials said. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting the Barrington Hills Police Department with the investigation, officials said.
