Daley fights to be dismissed from torture lawsuit
CHICAGO — Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is fighting a judge's ruling that he remain as a defendant in a lawsuit over police torture.
Daley is being sued by Michael Tillman, a man who claims Chicago police tortured him into confessing to murder.
Tillman served nearly 24 years in prison before being freed and has received a certificate of innocence from Cook County court.
Tillman is suing several officers, the city and Daley, among others.
Daley has been named in previous lawsuits filed by alleged torture victims, but judges have always dismissed him as a defendant.
Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer ruled that Daley should remain in Tillman's lawsuit on counts that accuse him of participating in a conspiracy to cover up the torture.
Daley is challenging that ruling.
