Man tries to jump from Sen. Kirk’s office

A man entered U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s downtown Chicago office Friday afternoon, broke a window and tried to jump, officials said.

The incident took place around 3 p.m. at Kirk’s 39th floor office at the Kluczynski Federal Building, located at 230 S. Dearborn St.

Kirk staffers alerted authorities from the Department of Homeland Security, who were able to quickly detain the suspect, Kirk spokesman Lance Trover said.

The senator was not in his office, since he is on naval duty, Trover said.

“We praise the rapid response of Homeland Security officers,” he said.

Chicago police received the initial dispatch call for an attempted suicide, said News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

The man was transported to a hospital for evaluation, O’Brien said.
