Pension series gives us valuable insight

I think I may be like many people who are concerned about rising deficits, expanded entitlement programs, and the growth of government. I also think I'm like many people in that it's hard sometimes to get the facts around the cost elements that are driving up our deficits.

I want to congratulate Robert McCoppin and the Daily Herald for providing a balanced view of the rising costs of public employee pensions and the possible solutions to the crisis. It is often said that the first way to address the problem is to recognize that it exists. Your paper has had the courage to address a difficult and emotional subject in an objective manner.

There are solutions that can put us on a road to solving this financial time bomb while managing the complex issues of personal financial pain for teachers, higher taxes for all taxpaying citizens, and fair compensation and benefit programs for teachers. Putting sunlight on the problem and addressing the possible solutions represents a noble effort by the Daily Herald. Please continue this important work and thank you.
