Twin Groves students receive superintendent awards
At the District 96 Twin Groves Middle School graduation ceremony, which took place at Stevenson High School, school board members and Superintendent Julie Schmidt celebrated the 203 eighth-grade graduates in the Class of 2011, including Superintendent Award recipients Kya Suzuki and Matthew Zalewski.
In presenting Kya’s award, Superintendent Schmidt described her as a human dynamo renowned for her enviable cross country and track times and her contributions to the Twin Groves Kolts volleyball team. In addition, Kya was an active member of the school’s Lean On Me Club, offering academic support and a helping hand to newcomers and peers.
Her teachers recommended role-model Kya for the Superintendent Award because of her focused diligence and leadership, both on and off the running track.
Similarly, the faculty selected Twin Groves eighth-grader Matthew Zalewski for recognition as one who consistently “goes above and beyond.”
Superintendent Schmidt noted that Matthew sought out extracurricular academic opportunities such as the History Fair and Math Club. He also was a conscientious contributor on the Kolt’s track, cross country, and basketball teams — and not only during meets and games. Matthew made it a priority to support team members off the track and court, as well, by tutoring teammates in need of academic support.
