2 injured, 1 critically, in Waukegan crash on Green Bay

Two people were injured, one in critically, in a major crash that shut down a stretch of Green Bay Road in Waukegan Wednesday night, police said.

The male driver of a vehicle was southbound on Green Bay Road about 9:35 p.m. when he crossed the center lane and struck a pickup truck that was waiting at a stop sign facing east on Greenwood Avenue, police said.

The vehicle smashed into the side of the pickup, pinning the male truck driver inside, said Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Andrea Ursy.

The sole occupant of the pickup was taken to Vista Medical Center East in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle was conscious and standing outside his vehicle at the scene but was taken to the same hospital in an unknown condition, police said.

An accident reconstruction team, which is called in only for fatal or serious injury crashes, was at the scene on Green Bay Road between Highland and Clearview Avenues late into the night.

Green Bay Road was shut down in both directions between Grand Avenue and Sunset Avenue and will remain closed until about midnight, Ursy said.
