Muddy Buddy competitors from Carpentersville want to help others

When Susan Powers needed motivation to start working out again, the 40-year-old Carpentersville resident found the kick-start she needed in an inspirational group of athletes and an organization that supports them.

In July, Powers and her teammate Liz Benson, will compete in the Columbia Muddy Buddy Chicago event at Indian Hills Farm in Gilberts. The 6-mile race, which features a number of obstacles including a mud pit, pairs running and cycling as teammates alternate activities as they try to complete the course in the fastest time.

All proceeds from the race benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a San Diego-based foundation that provides opportunities and support for individuals with physical disabilities so they can lead an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.

“I did a half-marathon a few years ago but then I pretty much went into a too-busy, nonactive lifestyle,” Powers said. “But these athletes got me motivated again. They have such great spirits and are awesome athletes.”

Powers and Benson have set a fundraising goal of $5,000. So far, the team has raised more than $1,700 through events at local restaurants and the support of local businesses.

“At first, I thought I was supporting the underdog,” Benson said. “But then I realized these athletes could blow me away in any sport.”

A fundraiser is set for Sunday, June 12, at 3 Vines Cafe, 1025 W. Main St., Sleepy Hollow. From noon-8 p.m. the cafe will donate 10 percent of all sales to the Challenged Athlete Foundation.

“The Muddy Buddy started out as a fun thing,” Powers said. “But once I learned more about the foundation, I had to get involved and help out anyway I could.”

In addition to the upcoming event at 3 Vines, the team will also have fundraisers on June 30 at Tilted Kilt in Elgin and at the Brunswick Zone in Algonquin on July 14.

At Tilted Kilt, from 6-10 p.m., a $5 cover charge will enter guests into raffles and a 50/50 drawing. Stand up comedian Steve Long, live music by the Centerfold Band and a performance by the Chicago Slaughter Girls are featured on the lineup.

If bowling is more your speed, $25 per person will get you two hours of bowling and shoes, a pizza and unlimited soda.
