Test results pending in possible Milwaukee heat death

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee County medical examiner's office says an autopsy has been completed on the nursing-home resident who died after staff left him outside for hours on a sweltering day.

The office said Wednesday the cause and manner of death won't be available until further toxicology tests are run. That could take several weeks.

Authorities say 69-year-old Martin Belkin was left outside in his wheelchair for more than three hours Tuesday afternoon. He was found unresponsive. Temperatures that day got as high as 97 degrees.

The medical examiner's office says Belkin's body temperature was 101.4 degrees following his death.

An investigative report says Belkin was left outside by staffers at the Sunrise Care Center in Milwaukee. Sunrise administrator Sue Blackwell says the facility is cooperating with authorities and conducting its own investigation.
