Fremd goes formal: Fashion students model their handmade prom dresses

William Fremd High School's Family and Consumer Science Department held its annual Prom Fashion Show April 16 for the student body.

In a runway setting, student models displayed more than 50 dresses, all handmade by students enrolled in the school's fashion classes. The dresses were made over a six-week period. Female models were escorted by Fremd High School junior and senior male students wearing tuxedos.

"The quality of dresses produced by our students keeps getting better and better each year," said Fremd High School Assistant Principal and Activity Director Eric Dolen. "As one watches the show, it is amazing to realize that high school students are capable of producing such intricate, beautiful gowns."

Courtney Young, Fremd's fashion instructor, played an instrumental role in taking the show to new heights these past five years. Not only does Young teach her students the necessary skills needed to design, sew, and construct high-quality garments, she also stresses the importance of the other facets that must go into producing a successful fashion show.

"Students put a lot of care and creativity into their garments," Young said. "They work as a team to choreograph scenes in the show. The students involved gained self-confidence and the knowledge of how to put together a fashion show for their peers."

In addition to her teaching duties and sponsoring the school's Fashion Club, Young also serves as an assistant director for the fall musical.

"Her knowledge of theater, paired with her sewing expertise, has proven to be extremely beneficial to our students," Dolen said.
