Defendant gets four years for Prospect Heights shooting

The second of two defendants charged after an altercation last February outside a Prospect Heights apartment complex has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated discharge of a weapon.

A Cook County judge sentenced Carlos Teran, of the 600 block of Piper Lane, to four years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea to charges that he fired a gun at a 26-year-old man driving a truck. The class 1 felony carries a potential punishment of four to 15 years in prison.

Police say Teran, and his co-defendant Michael Bahena, 18, flashed gang signs at the driver, who told police he was not in a gang. When he tried to drive away, Teran, 20, shot at him, police said.

Authorities say a school bus was unloading children around the time of the exchange.

Bahena pleaded guilty to mob action earlier this year and was sentenced to 128 days in jail and 30 months’ probation.

The judge ordered Teran to pay $650 in fines and gave him credit for the 116 days he has spent in custody since his arrest.
