Geneva emergency cooling centers announced

Geneva announced Tuesday its emergency cooling centers are open to people looking for relief from the heat.

When the heat index is forecast to reach 100 degrees for two or more consecutive days, creating a heat advisory, it opens the centers to the elderly, families with small children and other vulnerable residents.

The cooling centers are located at:

Ÿ Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays;

Ÿ The public works building, 1800 South St., 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays;

Ÿ Geneva Fire Department headquarters, 200 East Side Drive, all the time (no sleeping facilities).

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory is issued when the heat index is expected to reach at least 100 degrees but less than 115 degrees for less than three hours per day, or nighttime lows remain above 80 degrees for two consecutive days.
