Boy struck by van in Palatine

A young boy was injured after being struck by a van while he attempted to cross Northwest Highway in Palatine late Monday afternoon, police said.

The boy attempted to cross Northwest Highway at Glencoe Street and was struck by a van whose driver did not see him due to backed-up traffic, Palatine Police Sgt. Dave Weeks said.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at about 4:25 p.m. and shut down the northbound lanes of Northwest Highway as the accident reconstruction team took measurements.

Police said the boy was transported to Northwest Community Hospital, but did not know his condition other than stating it was a “serious accident.”

The boy was on Glencoe Street crossing Northwest Highway from east to west when a vehicle traveling south on Northwest Highway attempted to turn onto Glencoe and struck the boy. Police said backed-up traffic northbound on Northwest Highway made it impossible for the driver to see the boy.

Authorities said the driver is cooperating fully and is not expected to be charged in the accident.

Traffic was reopened about 20 minutes after the crash, Weeks said.
