Elgin Sports Hall names scholarship winners

The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation has announced its 25 scholarship recipients for the 2010-2011 school year.

These $1,000 scholarships are awarded to student-athletes that live in and/or attend high school in Elgin. Since the inception of the scholarship program in 1981, when one $500 scholarship was given, the foundation has now provided $282,000 for the scholarship program.

The recipients are:

Larkin — Trevor Whitehead, Cam Ross, Matt Rice, Blaire Threat, Corinne Wimmer, Megan Johnson.

Elgin HS — Deborah Baeder, Jennifer Fulton, Amanda Haugan, Jordan Dean, Joseph Kellenberger, Toby Schimel.

St. Edward — Michael Ellis, Sam Pozezinski, Mark Olenek, Tarah McShane, Sarah Field.

Westminster Christian — Ellie Fink, Katie Moeller, Hannah Graves, Steven Hoeflich, Ian Dutcher.

Elgin Academy — Emma Stone.

South Elgin — Ryan Pondel.

Burlington Central — Nicholas Hahn.

The scholarship winners will also be honored at the Hall of Fame’s banquet and induction ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 6 at The Centre of Elgin.

Golf

Hole-in-one: Rob Kramer recently carded a hole-in-one at Bowes Creek Country Club. It was on hole No. 3, which was playing 190 yards. Kramer used a 4-iron and the ace was witnessed by Dave Cox.

College softball

Stenning named coach of year: Gaining her third coach of the year award this season, Judson University softball coach Becky Stenning has been named the NFCA Regional Coach of the Year for NAIA schools. This award goes along with her being named the CCAC and NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year.

Stenning just completed her seventh season at Judson and had her finest season in 2011. She guided Judson to its first CCAC regular season championship and a program record 32 wins. Her team also received votes in the NAIA National Poll two different weeks.

Judson finished 32-18 on the year and 14-4 in the CCAC.

ECC athletes recognized: South Elgin graduates Courtney Bosteder and Rae Bosteder and Burlington Central alum Ashley Scheffler were recently named to the first-team all-conference for the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. Additionally, Scheffler was named to the Region IV Division II District A all-region team. Scheffler led the Spartans in hitting (. 440) and in-base percentage (. 484) and had a .952 fielding average at shortstop.

College awards

Judson’s Burke honored: The Judson University athletic department has been awarded another NAIA national award this year as junior Corey Burke has been named the A.O. Duer award winner, which is award to the top junior in the NAIA that who has excelled in character, playing ability and scholarship.

Burke, a soccer player for the Eagles, was the second leading scorer for his team this past year and was named all-CCAC. The pre-med major carries a 3.9 GPA and is an NAIA and NCCAA scholar-athlete. In the last two years he has helped Judson to a CCAC regular season championship, a NCCAA national championship, and two NCCAA national tournaments. He is the son of Judson head coach Steve Burke, who is also the all-time wins leader for the NAIA.

This is the third major award that the Judson University athletic department has received this year. In January, women’s cross country and track & field athlete Stephanie Belokon was chosen to be one of 10 athletes to participate in the NAIA/Red Cross Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Then, in May, Caleb Sutton received the NCCAAA’s highest award for track & field with the Wheeler award for academics and service.
