Chi Alpha Omega scholarships go to northwest suburban students

Newly elected Elgin City Council member Tish Powell and Elgin Area School District U-46 board member Traci Ellis will speak at the Chi Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s second annual Ivy League Program and Scholarship Awards Banquet on Saturday, June 4.

Three high school seniors from the northwest suburbs will be given scholarships to assist with their college costs: Brianna Bradford of Harry D. Jacobs High School in Algonquin; Sean Duminie of Schaumburg High School; and Nicole Reed of Hoffman Estates High School.

The banquet is the culmination of a 10-month program in which the students attended seminars, organized a career fair, attended field trips, and performed a community service project.

“Our Ivy League program gives youths a chance to experience different careers, and grooms them to become stellar leaders of the future,” said Chi Alpha Omega President Renee McMullen. “We focus on educational growth and the importance of giving back to the community.”

The scholarships are made possible through fundraising.

“We understand the challenges families in the northwest suburbs and the entire country face as they try to deal with the rising costs of sending their children to college. It’s important that we as an organization do our part to help lessen that burden,” said Ivy League chairwoman Tonya Branch.

The second annual Ivy League Program and Scholarship Awards Banquet will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, at the Elgin Community College Business Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
