Ex-Rutgers coach joins NU staff

Former Rutgers basketball coach Fred Hill has joined Northwestern’s staff, head coach Bill Carmody announced Tuesday.

Hill replaces Mitch Henderson, who was recently named the head coach at Princeton University.

“Fred’s coaching experience at a number of successful programs, coupled with his reputation as a top notch recruiter, should pay immediate dividends,” Carmody said. “I am thrilled he will be joining our staff.”

A 1981 graduate of Montclair State, Hill headed the Rutgers program for four years (2006-10) after serving one year as the associate head coach. He had a record of 47-77 there as a head coach and he successfully recruited a pair of top-50 players, including Mike Rosario, the first McDonald’s all-American in program history.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with and learn from coach Carmody, who has one of the brightest offensive minds in the game,” said Hill. “Northwestern is an outstanding academic institution and Bill has this program headed in the right direction.”

Hill’s squads made nine consecutive postseason appearances from 1998 through 2006 while he was a member of the coaching staffs at Fairleigh Dickinson, Seton Hall, Villanova and then Rutgers. As an assistant at Villanova, he was rated the No. 1 assistant coach in the nation by Basketball Times in 2004-05 and by Lindy’s College Basketball magazine in 2002-03.

He has also served as an assistant coach at Maine (1988-91), Marquette (1986-88), Rider (1983-86), Lehigh (1982-83) and Montclair State (1981-82).
