Union Pacific derailment disrupts Amtrak service
WILMINGTON -- A freight train derailment has caused delays in Amtrak passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says three freight cars filled with ballast rock, which is used around railroad tracks, derailed early Friday morning in southwestern Will County about two miles south of Wilmington.
No injuries were reported.
Davis says the derailment damaged about 1,200 feet of Union Pacific tracks, which are used by Amtrak, and repairs were not expected to be completed until Saturday evening.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says Amtrak chartered motor coaches to carry passengers around the closed track on Friday and Saturday.
