Bensenville sprays for gypsy moths

Some Bensenville residents hoping to sleep in on Memorial Day were awakened by the drone of a helicopter applying a spray treatment for gypsy moths.

One resident complained the noise woke him at 5:45 a.m. Bensenville Village Manager

Michael Cassady said he is sorry for the inconvenience, but due to recent poor weather, Monday “was the first day we had ideal spraying conditions, which was critical so we can get the application (completed.)”

Residents living in the treatment area were informed by letter that spraying would take place the week of May 30. The treatment involves spraying a fine mist of a naturally occurring bacterium to reduce the number of gypsy moth caterpillars, which cause tree defoliation.
