Ex-E. Chicago mayor appeals conviction, sentence

HAMMOND, Ind. — Former East Chicago Mayor George Pabey is appealing his conviction on conspiracy and theft of city funds charges and his subsequent five-year prison sentence.

Pabey attorney Scott King argues in the filing Monday in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago that Pabey deserves a new trial, or at least a new sentence. The Times of Munster reports that King questions whether U.S. District Judge James Moody erred in giving final jury instructions. He also questions whether Moody erred when he applied sentencing enhancements.

King contends Pabey should have been sentenced to 27 months to 33 months in prison.

Pabey was convicted in September of having city employees work on a home he owns in Gary with his daughter.
