Quinn asks feds for flood aid
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Gov. Pat Quinn has formally asked the federal government to help communities recover from this spring's devastating floods in southern Illinois.
WSIU Radio reports that Quinn's request seeks reimbursement for local governments in 21 counties that saw waters rise well above flood stage along rivers, lakes and streams.
Damage is estimated at more than $20 million across the region, and cleanup continues as the water finally reaches normal stages.
The counties included in the request are: Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marion, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White and Williamson.
The state asked for aid for residents and businesses late last month, and officials are still waiting for a response. The state declared a disaster in the area in April.
