Your news Family-focused Chess Club sets first meeting in Wheeling
A newly formed, family-focused, Chess Club will meet at the Indian Trails Public Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck, Wheeling, every other Friday evening. The first meeting will be 7 p.m. Friday, June 10.
The club, which will meet for 90-minute sessions, will be lead by Eric Heiser of the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, based in Northbrook. Present plans include meetings every other Friday until Aug. 12. June meetings are scheduled for Fridays, June 10 and 24.
The library is encouraging families to learn and play chess because it is more than just a game. In the days of fast moving, action-packed video games, chess has remained a popular game. In addition to the challenge of winning, it teaches the valuable lessons of problem solving, critical thinking, and goal setting. In addition, the Chess Club brings families and the community together with a game suited for all ages. Unlike many other games, after years of play, it can still remain exciting to play and always offers a chance to learn something new.
The club will be devoted to both studying chess tactics, and having fun actually playing the game, according to Heiser. The study time will focus on chess tactics such as pins, forks and skewers. Instruction will be provided at a level that should involve all ages. Chess boards will be provided. Registration is not required.
If your family is looking for something new, stop by the library 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, for a friendly game of chess. For information, call the library at (847) 459-4100.
