Wisconsin Assembly to begin state budget debate
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Assembly is set to begin debating the state's two-year budget under heightened security in the Capitol.
The Republican-controlled Assembly was expected to start debating Gov. Scott Walker's two-year spending plan sometime late on Tuesday.
There is a heightened level of security given the high level of interest in the bill, ongoing protests outside the Capitol tied to the budget, and concerns that lawmakers may debate collective bargaining rights again.
Walker's proposal scaling back those rights brought tens of thousands of people to Madison earlier this year.
His budget slashes spending for public education and makes numerous other changes to deal with a projected $3 billion shortfall.
