Hockey player good as new thanks to surgery
After Lake Forest College goalie Mike McDonald suffered a devastating shoulder injury on the ice, Dr. Roger Chams, an arthroscopic surgeon, restored McDonald's injured shoulder by transplanting fresh bone and cartilage from a donor's ankle in its place.
As of two years ago, this surgery (osteochondral allograft of the glenoid), had never been done before. Chams is one of two orthopedic surgeons in Illinois, and the only physician in Lake Forest, who can perform this procedure.
With a traditional arthroscopic surgery, McDonald would have only had a 70 percent chance of recovery. Because Chams was able to present this procedure as an alternative, McDonald has been able to return to the game he loves.
