Pedal boats coming to the Fox

Elgin’s portion of the Fox River may soon have more than just ducks and a casino floating on it.

Justin Hodge took an idea to the city two years ago and — as long as the council approves his license — will start offering pedal boat rides and concessions June 10. Hodge’s businesses, Blue Hippo Pedal Boats and Jah’s Concessions Stand, will be based in Festival Park from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day through an extended summer season.

Hodge, who also owns Good Life Marketing and Promotions, said there will be five boats available for one-hour rides at $7 per adult or $5 each for those younger than 18.

As a lifelong Elgin resident, Hodge wanted to see something recreational on the river. He thinks pedal boats is the perfect thing.

“I thought that would be something nice I could bring to the city,” he said.

No other vendors have reached out to the city for their own licenses for Festival Park, according to Randy Reopelle, director of Parks and Recreation. Until June 2010, vendors were only allowed during special events.

Reopelle said Festival Park already draws a substantial number of families and the pedal boats will only add to the attraction.

“This will give people something new to do this summer,” Reopelle said.

Riders younger than 18 will need to have a parent or guardian with them and all riders will need to wear a life jacket. The boats come equipped with GPS tracking devices, two-way radio and Blue Hippo employees will have access to a motorized water craft for emergency situations.

Elgin City Council members will discuss the license at Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting.
