Batavia MainStreet brings back Green Walk

Popular demand persuaded Batavia MainStreet to bring back its Green Walk this year.

The organization hadn’t intended on having another environmental fair, but now has decided to do it in conjunction with the “Bulldogs Unleashed!” event June 10.

Partners include the Batavia Community Garden and the Batavia Environmental Commission.

It will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. downtown on Wilson Street.

There will be samples of local food, wine and beer; a chicken-keeper will bring her hens; gardeners can exchange seeds; information about river care will be provided. Volunteers from the Community Garden will speak, and you can sculpt figures with clay straight out of the Fox River. Someone will present information on composting. And there will be activities for children.

“After four years, we feel like we are starting to really get this event to where we want it,” said Jim Kirkhoff, one of the event organizers, in a prepared statement “It was originally an adjunct to the original Arts Walks. It has changed and grown significantly since then. The best part is that the local businesses are becoming more involved.”

At 7 p.m. the “Bulldogs Unleashed!” art project will be presented. Twenty-five custom-painted bulldog statues will be placed around town, to be viewed throughout the summer. The project is organized by the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, the Batavia Parks Foundation and the Batavia Public Library Foundation.
