Fire ravages townhouse in Wheeling

A two-story townhouse in Wheeling was left uninhabitable after a fire Thursday night, authorities said.

The blaze broke out about 10:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Custer Court, leaving the home “pretty well destroyed,” according to Battalion Chief Joe Deppong of the Wheeling Fire Department.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene. Residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to escape safely, Deppong said.

The fire may have started outside the home, Deppong said, but investigators are still trying to probe a cause.

The unit next door also sustained some minor damage.
