Wheeling man charged with attempted battery
Police say a Wheeling man menaced a female and two children by saturating a bedroom floor and bedding with rubbing alcohol and threatening to ignite the items with a cigarette lighter.
A Cook County judge set bail at $100,000 Saturday for Robin Wilbon, 42, charged with attempted arson, attempted heinous battery and resisting a peace officer.
Wilbon demanded money Friday morning from the woman and threatened to light the room on fire if she refused, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Robin Murphy during Wilbon’s bond hearing Saturday in Rolling Meadows. Wilbon also stood in the doorway, preventing the victims from exiting the room, Murphy said. No other information was available on the victims.
Prosecutors cited Wilbon’s criminal background which consists of multiple convictions from Georgia. They include convictions for depositing bad checks in 1987 and 1998; a conviction for attempted burglary in 1997 for which he was sentenced to two years in prison; and a 2002 conviction for criminal trespass to property, among others, Murphy said.
If convicted of the class 1 felonies, Wilbon could face four to 15 years in prison. He next appears in court on April 18.
