Lombard chooses Breen, Fitzpatrick

Lombard voters chose experience in one district and youth in another Tuesday as they re-elected village board incumbent District 5 Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick and chose Peter Breen, the youngest candidate in a three-way District 4 race.

Unofficial final vote totals show Fitzpatrick received 470 votes to defeat challenger James Hogan, who received 388.

In District 4, Breen received 438 votes. Jeff Shuert followed with 261 and David Brown received 98.

District 2 Trustee Keith Giagnorio retained his seat after running unopposed.

Fitzpatrick and Breen said voters chose them after seeing their dedication to a trustee’s duties.

“I really put 100 percent passion into the job and I think that shows,” Fitzpatrick, 53, said.

First elected to village board in 2007, Fitzpatrick directs a district office for a state representative, leads the village board’s community relations committee and founded the Lombard Arts Coalition.

Breen, 34, beat two other candidates who squared off for the District 4 seat left open by trustee Dana Moreau, who chose not to seek re-election.

“I’d like to think that I worked harder,” Breen said. “I think people saw that and said ‘This is the guy who’s going to work hardest for us.’”

Breen, a public interest attorney, started two local organizations to help pregnant women and a grass-roots coalition against red-light cameras in Lombard.

Breen, Fitzpatrick and Giagnorio will be sworn in at a village board meeting May 5.
