Agents seize 1,700+ fake licenses at O’Hare

U.S. Customs agents have seized more than 1,700 counterfeit driver’s licenses at O’Hare International Airport this year that have been sent over from China, the agency announced Thursday.

The majority of the “high quality” counterfeits were addressed to college students throughout the U.S., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Our greatest concern is the ease at which these high quality fakes can be ordered over the Internet,” said David Murphy, Customs’ director of field operations in Chicago.

The seized licenses are counterfeits for the states of Illinois, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania, according to the agency.

Officials said some licenses were shipped in envelopes while others were hidden inside various electronics and gifts. The shipments contained between two and 48 licenses, according to the agency.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are investigating some of the intended recipients, officials said.
