Build, not destroy Affordable Care Act

We recently marked the anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Several residents of Kane County braved the miserable weather to show support for the act and encourage their congressman, Randy Hultgren, to stop the attack on a bill that will help millions of uninsured Americans acquire affordable health insurance.

At a time when Americans are faced with economic hardship, it was encouraging to see people rally for a cause that may or may not benefit them; but will benefit a neighbor, a friend, or a fellow citizen. Too often we get caught up in our own troubles and we forget that our neighbor down the street is facing the same, if not a greater, burden. As Paul Wellstone used to say, “We all do better when we all do better.”

This act will not solve our economic or budget crisis. That was never the intent. The intent was to make it easier and more affordable for millions of uninsured Americans to receive health insurance. The Affordable Care Act, undeniably, has its flaws. But it is a step in the right direction. I urge Congressman Hultgren to improve upon what has been started, rather than regress and give up.

I would like to thank the Geneva Police Department for helping with the event. I would also like to thank Congressman Hultgren’s staff for making sure that everyone had a chance to voice their opinion.
