Mundelein man guilty in bogus card case
A Mundelein man who is in this country illegally was sentenced to six months in jail Friday when he admitted possessing three forged Social Security cards.
Lake County Circuit Judge James Booras told Jose Roman-Cordova, 23, that he is likely to face deportation to his native Mexico after he serves his jail time.
Assistant State's Attorney Eric Kalata said Mundelein police were called to Roman-Cordova's residence on the 200 block of Walnut Street about 6 a.m. Feb. 20 for a domestic dispute.
Once there, Kalata said, police found a loaded handgun and three Social Security cards in the name of another man.
Roman-Cordova admitted that both the gun and the cards were his, Kalata said, and he was charged with forgery and possession of a weapon without a state Firearm Owners Identification card.
Kalata said he agreed to drop the weapons charge in exchange for Roman-Cordova's guilty plea to forgery.
In addition to the jail time, Booras sentenced Roman-Cordova to two years of probation and ordered him to pay a $300 fine.
Mundelein police will retain possession of the handgun, Kalata said.
