Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 1
Big hits: Alfonso Soriano pulled a leadoff homer to left in the third inning, tying the game at 1-1. In the eighth, he made it 4-1 with an opposite-field single to right. “I’m trying to be more selective at the plate and hit the ball to right field, too,” he said. “That’s more important to me, because I know I can hit homers.”
Birds for Byrd: Center fielder Marlon Byrd caught the last out of the game as the ball passed through a flock of gulls. “You have stuff flying in front of you, and you’re trying to catch a little ball,” he said. “Yeah, it is (tough).”
Quality effort: Randy Wells turned in the Cubs’ third straight quality start. He worked 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 run. He threw 99 pitches, 57 strikes.
