Peavy says rehab start step in right direction
Jake Peavy hit the comeback trail again on Friday night, and the White Sox’ injured starting pitcher was relatively pleased after pitching 3 innings for Class AA Birmingham.
“Everything went well tonight,” Peavy said after facing Montgomery and allowing 2 unearned runs on 5 hits. “It was a step in the right direction. My arm felt better than it has in quite a while. I didn’t command the ball the way I hoped, but it was nice to be under some lights in a nice competitive atmosphere.”
Peavy, on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis, threw 71 pitches, 43 for strikes. The right-hander had 1 walk, 4 strikeouts and 1 wild pitch.
If he stays healthy, Peavy is expected to make 3 or 4 more minor-league starts and rejoin the Sox in early May.
“When my pitch count is where it needs to be... I want to pitch in the big leagues five days from now,” Peavy said. “If it was up to me, I would throw 90 in the big leagues on Wednesday. That’s not realistic. So you do what the team asks you to do, and be smart. I feel like my arm strength is getting there.”
Local guy makes good:As reported in the Daily Herald on Thursday, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had a replacement in mind had bench coach Joey Cora been hired as the Brewers#146; manager over the winter.Fremd High School grad Mike Gellinger, who assists Sox hitting coach Greg Walker and also serves as the computer scouting analyst, was Guillen#146;s choice to take over for Cora.#147;He told me about it last year,#148; Gellinger said. #147;I think it#146;s great. It#146;s something you always strive for, but you never know what#146;s going to happen. I think I could do it, but you never know in this game about anything.#148;No go for Dunn:Designated hitter Adam Dunn missed his third straight game after having an appendectomy in Kansas City Tuesday night.According to manager Ozzie Guillen, Dunn is also going to sit out the final two games against Tampa Bay and his return remains up in the air.#147;We#146;ve got to wait five days,#148; Guillen said. #147;I have to. Every day he feels better and better, but I don#146;t expect him to be back in five days, to be honest with you.#148;Guillen doesn#146;t even want to use Dunn as a pinch-hitter should the need arise.#147;If I have to pinch-hit Adam Dunn with the game on the line, I#146;d rather lose the game than have him hurt himself and lose him for we don#146;t know how long,#148; Guillen said.Tea time:Mark Teahen hasn#146;t given White Sox fans much to cheer about since coming over in a trade from the Royals before the 2010 season.Making his first start of the season Friday night as the Sox#146; designated hitter, Teahen got some positive reaction from the crowd of 20,199 while going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, including a solo home run in the fourth inning and a clutch 2-run single in the eighth.Until Adam Dunn returns, Teahen is likely to DH against right-handed starters.#147;It#146;s different,#148; he said. #147;I haven#146;t DHed a ton but at the same time, it#146;s nothing too strange. I think the main thing is just making sure I#146;m swinging at strikes and being aggressive. I#146;m trying to make the most out of every opportunity I get.#148;
