Man gets seven years for having drugs near school

A Zion man was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday after he admitted he was carrying drugs near an Antioch school.

Courtney Boyd, 33, pleaded guilty to possession of controlled substances within 1,000 feet of a school during a hearing before Lake County Associate Judge George Bridges.

Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Demartini said Antioch police stopped Boyd’s car as he was driving north on Hillside Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 because it had a loud muffler.

When an officer smelled freshly burned marijuana in the car, Boyd was ordered out of the vehicle and searched.

The officer found a little more than a gram of cocaine in one small plastic bag and a little less than a gram of heroin in four different bags during the search.

Boyd, who faced a maximum of 30 years in prison for this offense, was sentenced to prison for drug possession after convictions in 2007 and 2003, Demartini said.
