Police identify Lake Barrington woman killed in Lake Zurich crash

A 56-year-old Lake Barrington woman standing alongside her stopped vehicle on the shoulder of Rand Road in Lake Zurich was killed Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle that had veered off the roadway, according to police.

Katherine W. Hoffman was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroners Office, said Lt. Christopher Thompson of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded at 2:50 p.m. to reports of a three-vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of Rand Road near Honey Lake Road.

According to authorities, the driver of a southbound vehicle veered off the roadway and struck Hoffman and her vehicle, which had been pulled over on the shoulder. The stopped vehicle was pushed into a third vehicle on the shoulder, according to police.

Hoffman’s identity initially was withheld by authorities until family members were notified late Thursday night, Thompson said.

The driver of the vehicle that swerved off the roadway was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington for treatment of injuries. The driver will be required by law to provide a blood sample to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, police said.

Charges are still pending, officials said Friday morning, and the investigation is continuing.
