Notre Dame holds off Connecticut
In the end, No. 8 Notre Dame didn’t need Ben Hansbrough, and Connecticut needed more than Kemba Walker.
Hansbrough scored 21 points despite fouling out with more than eight minutes left, and Notre Dame held off Walker and the 16th-ranked Huskies 70-67 on Saturday in Storrs, Conn.
“I love all my teammates and I’m was just thrilled for them to go out and get it done,” Hansbrough said. “It means a lot for me.”
Walker scored 34 points but missed a 3-point attempt with eight seconds left and UConn (22-9, 9-9) trailing 69-67. Donnell Beverly also fumbled away a pass just before time ran out.
Carleton Scott and Tyrone Nash each had 13 points for the Fighting Irish (25-5, 14-4 Big East), who finished a game behind conference champion Pittsburgh. The Irish closed the regular season with 4 straight wins and have won 11 of 12 overall.
Kansas 70, Missouri 66:
Marcus Morris and Thomas Robinson had double-doubles, and No. 2 Kansas (29-2, 14-2 Big 12) wrapped up its seventh straight conference championship by holding on to beat host No. 22 Missouri (22-9, 8-8).
BYU 102, Wyoming 78:
Jimmer Fredette scored 38 points, and host No. 3 BYU (28-3, 14-2 Mountain West) hammered Wyoming (10-20, 3-13). Charles Abouo scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half for the Cougars.
Pittsburgh 60, Villanova 50:
Ashton Gibbs had 18 points to help host No. 4 Pittsburgh (27-4, 15-3 Big East) beat No. 19 Villanova (21-10, 9-9) and clinch the outright conference title.
North Carolina 81, Duke 67:
Harrison Barnes scored 18 points to help host No. 13 North Carolina (24-6, 14-2 Atlantic Coast) beat No. 4 Duke (27-4, 13-3), clinching the regular-season conference championship.
Texas 60, Baylor 54:
Texas freshman Tristan Thompson had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 7 Longhorns (25-6, 13-3 Big 12) beat host Baylor (18-12, 7-9), whose NCAA Tournament hopes took another big hit.
San Diego St. 66, Colorado 48:
Kawhi Leonard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and host No. 9 San Diego State (29-2, 14-2 Mountain West) beat Colorado State (19-11, 9-7) to share the conference title with No. 3 BYU.
Ball St. 67, Northern Illinois 57:
Jesse Berry scored 17 points, and host Ball State (18-12, 10-6 MAC) beat Northern Illinois (9-20, 5-11) to claim the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in next week’s conference tournament. Tim Toler scored 17 points to lead the Huskies, who are the No. 10 seed and will play at seventh-seeded Bowling Green in the first round Tuesday.
