St. Charles police Taser man 3 times, once accidentally

St. Charles police delivered Taser gun shocks to a Carol Stream man three times, including one accidental round, during an incident at a downtown tavern Saturday night.

A new police report indicates officers observed Brandon Devon Byrd, 26, of the 600 block of Gunderson Drive slinging objects onto a crowded dance floor at the tavern. When an officer grabbed Byrd by his arm and told him to stop, Byrd “took a fighting stance” and told officers not to touch him. The report states Byrd then began taunting officers so police told him to leave the dance area. When Byrd repeatedly refused, an officer shot him with a Taser gun.

Byrd dropped to the floor, then police helped him to his feet and told him to turn and face the wall. Byrd repeatedly refused, police said, and he was Tasered a second time.

As Byrd recovered, police began handcuffing him. One of the patrons on the dance floor, however, bumped the officer with the Taser gun, triggering a third — and accidental — shock on Byrd. The Taser was then deactivated.

Police arrested Byrd, who continued to swear at the officers until they arrived at the station. At that point, Byrd calmed down and admitted to throwing money onto the dance floor, according to the police report, which indicated Byrd was charged with obstructing a peace officer.
