Peavy leaves rehab start in first
While recovering from a detached lat in his posterior right shoulder, a “blip” was expected in Jake Peavy's comeback.
It came on March 19, when Peavy was shut down with tendinitis in the shoulder during spring training.
It looks like blip No. 2 came Monday night.
Peavy had to make an early exit from his rehab start with Class AA Birmingham.
The 29-year-old starter initially was scheduled to throw 90-95 pitches for the Barons, but Peavy left the game with two outs in the first inning after allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. He threw 15 pitches.
Afterward, Peavy declined to comment on the latest setback, which is not a good sign.
And after the Sox fell to Tampa Bay 5-0 at Tropicana Field on Monday night — their fifth straight loss — manager Ozzie Guillen did not sound too optimistic about Peavy.
“Bad news for the White Sox,” Guillen told reporters. “It's something I worry about because he's my player and that's a setback for him. Hopefully, tomorrow we have better news. I think he's going to see the doctor. In my mind, I know it was going to happen.
“If it happens in July … of course, we want him here, but we have to wait and be patient with him.”
Peavy was expected to make one more minor-league start Saturday before rejoining the White Sox.
Needless to say, that's not going to happen.
