Four indicted in woman's death
Four Waukegan residents accused of killing an innocent woman in the course of a gang reprisal were indicted Wednesday by a Lake County grand jury.
Pierre Dorn, 29, Stephen Moore, 19, Luis Nazario, Jr., 18, and Jamell Smith, 17, all are charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 23 shooting of Amy Williams, 29.
Assistant State's Attorney Stephen Scheller said Williams, a mother of three children, was shot once in the chest as she stood on a second-floor porch of a house in the 700 block of Walnut Street.
Scheller said the four suspects were apparently retaliating for a stabbing that took place earlier in the day that did not involve Williams or any member of her family.
All four suspects were associated with the person who was stabbed, Scheller said, and no one connected with the investigation believes Williams was the intended target of the gunfire.
Smith was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, Scheller said, but will be tried as an adult under state law.
All four suspects face a mandatory sentence of 45 years to life in prison if convicted of the crime, Scheller said.
All four are held on $3 million bond and are scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 2.
