Cohen submits resignation letter to state party
Scott Lee Cohen has given Illinois Democratic Party leaders a letter withdrawing himself from the lieutenant governor's race.
A spokesman for Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan says the state party received the resignation letter Friday and it will be filed Tuesday with the State Board of Elections. Madigan also is the state party chairman.
A Cohen spokesman also says the letter was given to the state party.
Cohen, a pawnbroker and owner of a cleaning products distribution company, won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in the Feb. 2 primary. But he announced Sunday he would step aside after word spread that he once was accused of abusing his ex-wife and holding a knife to the throat of an ex-girlfriend.
