Waukegan among storm's hardest hit suburbs

WAUKEGAN — Thousands of residents in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan are still waiting for power two days after a storm pummeled the region.

City officials say nearly all of the 100,000 residents were affected by the storm in some way — making it one of the hardest hit communities in Monday's storm that at one point left more than 850,000 customers without power.

ComEd says about 175,000 customers remain without power — most of them, like Waukegan, north of Chicago.

Officials say the 23,000 customers still without power in Waukegan may be in the dark for several more days.

In the meantime, sidewalks and streets are littered with tree branches, downed trees, and power lines snaking along the ground, with residents packed into grocery stores buying supplies.
