No one hurt in early-morning Elgin fire
No one was injured in an early-morning fire Friday at a home in an Elgin retirement community, fire officials said.
The fire in the 2700 block of Cascade Falls was spotted about 2:25 a.m. by a man plowing snow, Elgin Fire Battalion Chief Rob Cagann said.
The snowplow driver went to the home to wake up the two residents inside. The family said smoke detectors in the home woke them up and they were exiting as the snowplow driver approached the door.
A family dog also escaped the fire without injuries, Cagann said. The family is staying with relatives.
Firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames, Cagann said, and a box alarm was called to help subdue the fire. The fire was under control in 30 minutes.
Cagann said two neighboring homes received minor damages. Fire spread to the attic of one of the homes, causing about $40,000 in damages. An adjacent home received some exterior damage.
The main structure of the house on fire was deemed uninhabitable, with damage estimates at more than $300,000, Cagann said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, though police officials said the fire did not seem suspicious.
Firefighters from Rutland-Dundee, South Elgin, Carpentersville, Algonquin and Pingree Grove assisted at the scene, Cagann said.
