Kids can make 3-D glasses at Oakbrook

3-D is the latest craze for movies from "Avatar" to "Toy Story 3."

So it's a good bet kids will enjoy making their own 3-D glasses with paper and cellophane during a free children's art workshop at Flights of Fancy, the 47th annual Fine Craft Exhibition at Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook.

But their parents won't need 3-D glasses to appreciate the three-dimensional sculptures of glass, clay and bronze; the delicate handcrafted jewelry, or the brilliantly colored fiber art on display in the juried show.

More than 100 artists from throughout the country will exhibit their work at the two-day event, Saturday and Sunday, July 10 and 11.

Many artists return every summer to the set up their displays against a backdrop of colorful summer flowers. The show is one of the Midwest's largest open-air fine craft exhibitions.

"It's a lovely venue," said Lynne McNulty, a Glen Ellyn artist who has been bringing handmade, one-of-a-kind knitted sweaters, shawls, vests, scarves and hand warmers to the show for 20 years.

Her sweaters sell in the $400 range; shawls and vests are $200.

The Oak Brook show attracts interested buyers with sophisticated tastes, McNulty said. More than 130,000 people are expected to attend this year's show.

"We are very proud of the exhibition's history and tradition," said Suzanne Beres, senior marketing manager of Oakbrook Center.

Free children's art workshops by the DuPage Art League will run noon to 4 p.m. both days next to Pottery Barn Kids.
