Elgin Scout earns Eagle rank
Scout Troop 2 of St. John Lutheran Church in Elgin recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to Brandon Pankonin, son of Jeff and Tammy Pankonin of Carpentersville.
To achieve Eagle Scout rank, each young man must complete at least 21 merit badges and have planned, developed and given leadership to others in a service project that benefits his church, community or school. Only 4 percent of Scouts attain Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
As a Scout, Brandon earned 26 merit badges, including his favorite called Shotgun. This merit badge is a course of education in Illinois laws, safety and handling. The best part of this merit badge, according to Brandon, is the annual campout called Canyon Camp, where Brandon was able to work on this merit badge, learn nature tracking and also where he received the Orion Challenge Award for Bow and Arrow skills.
Brandon has been able to attend many different campouts with Troop 2 and recently attended a High Adventure trip to Scout Sea Base in Florida to learn snorkeling, sailing and fishing. Brandon also has enjoyed holding leadership roles as Troop Guide and Patrol Leader.
While working on the Disabilities Merit Badge, Brandon found that the Little Angels Home in Elgin needed some work on their facility. Brandon chose as his Eagle Project to prime, paint and do repairs to their dining hall, as well as install much-needed cabinetry. He organized Scouts and adults in a two-day project to complete the work.
Since achieving his Eagle rank, Brandon has worked hard to add to his rank by earning a Bronze Palm. The Palm awards are given to a Scout who has continued his leadership and skill development. Brandon has found that making friends and attending campouts has been his favorite part of being a Scout.
