Warren exploded for 5 run in the fifth inning on the way to a 7-0 victory over Maine West in season-opening nonconference softball action Monday.
Megan Sowa, Abbey Anderson and Sarah Shanders each had 2 hits for Warren. Anderson drove in 3 runs while Sowa drove in 2 runs.
Blue Devils pitcher Marcee Olvera went 5 innings and struck out three.
Glenbrook North 5, Lake Zurich 4: Despite a 4-run sixth inning, Lake Zurich couldn’t pull out a win in its season opener. Tab Bohac had 2 hits and a run for the Bears

Mundelein 8, Grant 3: Ben Mahar pitched 3 innings in relief and got the win for Mundelein, which was up 4-0 after four innings and scored 4 more runs in the sixth inning. Grant, which got 2 hits from Jake Ring, scored all 3 of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Girls water polo
Vernon Hills 16, Maine South 11: Dana Andrea scored 6 goals and rolled up 9 steals and 6 assists to lead Vernon Hills to victory. Goalie Gena Lopez had 9 blocks for the Cougars.
Libertyville 7, Conant 1: Libertyville jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead en route to the win.
