Sinkhole swallows 2 cars in Milwaukee; no injuries

MILWAUKEE — City crews are working to ensure that a sinkhole that swallowed two cars in Milwaukee does not widen.

The 10-foot deep, 625-square-foot hole near the Humboldt Bridge was caused by a 42-inch water main that broke around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Nobody was in the cars and nobody was injured.

One of the vehicles belonged to musician Andrew Gelles, who told WTMJ-TV he could tell something was not right. He says he was standing on the concrete nearby, and that the vibration was like a train under his feet.

Public Works spokeswoman Cecilia Gilbert told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that traffic is back to normal in the area.
