White Sox’ Peavy sidelined with shoulder discomfort
Remember that “blip” the White Sox have been anticipating with Jake Peavy since spring training started in mid-February?
It arrived Sunday.
According to reports out of the Sox’ camp in Glendale, Ariz., Peavy has been shut down with shoulder discomfort.
Making steady progress from surgery in July to repair a detached lat muscle, Peavy apparently was not feeling good after throwing 83 pitches in a Cactus League start against the Athletics on Saturday.
Talking to reporters Sunday, Peavy said he actually hasn’t felt quite right since March 4, when he made his first exhibition start.
“It’s kind of been coming since that first time,” said Peavy, who reportedly is taking anti-inflammatory medicine. “It has been getting a little more uncomfortable as I keep going. We want to not let it mount into some bigger issue than it is. But at the same time, I’m thinking it’s just part of getting back into the routine. I threw for an awfully long time without any setbacks.
“Once you start going close to game speed like I have, things can pop up. You’re asking your body to do exactly what you’re going to do in the regular season. It obviously has caused a little bit of discomfort. It’s a small step back, and we’ll re-evaluate the situation in the next couple of days to see where we go from there.”
Considered a near lock to break camp with the Sox after Saturday’s start, Peavy doesn’t figure to be on the 25-man roster when the regular season opens April 1 at Cleveland.
“He will be in Cleveland on Opening Day, but I don’t know if he’s going to be on the roster,” said Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.
“I know for a fact he wants to be on the team, but we have to make sure when he’s on the team, he’s on the team for good.”
The White Sox do have an in-house option to replace Peavy — right-hander Phil Humber.
The No. 3 overall pick in the 2004 draft (Mets), Humber had Tommy John surgery in 2006 and is still trying to live up to big expectations.
In 5 Cactus League appearances with the Sox (1 start), Humber is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA.
