Last chance to join Des Plaines chamber's 'Food Fight'

This is the last weekend to collect donations for the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry's eighth annual "Food Fight" benefiting the Self-Help Closet and Food Pantry of Des Plaines.

The challenge, which began Feb. 1, ends Monday, March 1. Its purpose is for community organizations in the spirit of competition to one-up each other in collecting nonperishable food items.

The pantry serves roughly 800 Des Plaines families each month.

The Rotary Club of Des Plaines won last year's challenge, collecting more than 3,200 pounds of food.

The goal this year is to surpass last year's total of more than 7,900 pounds of food and personal care products donated.

For more information or to participate, call the chamber office at (847) 824-4200 or call Debra Walusiak, Food pantry community resource director, at (847) 337-1443 to schedule a time to drop off collected food donations.
