Fire signs midfielder Paul

The Chicago Fire has signed Davis Paul, the University of California midfielder selected in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft (51st overall).

“We’ve been pleased with Davis’ skill, effort and attitude on-and-off the field,” said Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas. “Davis is a creative player and a strong competitor with the ability to play up top and on the wing. We are excited about his future with the club.”

The Fire snagged Paul with the 15th selection in third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. The Upland, Calif., player scored 15 goals and added 21 assists in 78 appearances with the Golden Bears from 2007-2010. Paul (5-foot-8, 145 pounds) was named NSCAA Third Team All-American and NSCAA First Team All-Pac-10 in his final season at Berkeley.

The Fire begins its 14th MLS season on the road against FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The home opener at Toyota Park is against Sporting Kansas City at 3 p.m. March 26.
