Drug charges for Hoffman Estates man
Police arrested a 19-year-old Hoffman Estates man Friday after he reneged on a previous deal with law enforcement officials to cooperate in a drug investigation.
Michael Benjamin was charged Saturday with manufacturing and delivery of cannabis stemming from his original arrest in December at his home on the 1500 block of Crowfoot Circle, prosecutors said.
Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Moe Ahmad told Judge Samuel Betar III that Benjamin initially was arrested Dec. 14 after an undercover officer bought marijuana from another man at the Hoffman Estates residence.
When police showed up at the home later that day, Benjamin handed over 13 individually wrapped bags containing a substance that tested positive for marijuana, Ahmad said. The drugs Benjamin turned over weighed less than an ounce, Ahmad told the judge.
Ahmad said Benjamin agreed to cooperate with police in exchange for dropping the original drug charges, but police had those charges reinstated when Benjamin later refused to help.
Betar set Benjamin's bail at $2,000 and he was released after posting the required 10 percent. His next court date is March 30.
