Healthy at Hammerschmidt
The lunch menu at Hammerschmidt Elementary School in Lombard Elementary District 44 began seeing some healthy changes Tuesday.
Whole grains such as brown rice or whole wheat hamburger buns will be served three times a week. Dark green and orange vegetables, beans and fresh fruit all will be available at least once a week.
The menu changes help Hammerschmidt meet the standards of the Healthier US School Challenge, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and will last through May.
The district is testing the menu changes at Hammerschmidt before possibly expanding them to the other five elementary schools and Glenn Westlake Middle School.
